Please read the story of Holly the Catalina Island Mermaid.
HOLLY THE MERMAID FROM CATALINA ISLAND
Back in the 1920's there was a baseball club known as the Chicago Cubs and they were owned by a man named William Wrigley Jr., the chewing gum magnate. Mr. Wrigley and family also owned the beautiful island which they had called Catalina. The baseball players had spring training at the Las Casitas ball field on Avalon Canyon Road for about 30 years. In the first season there was a young man named Raymond Maxie. He was a pitcher. His first year with the team was 1921 , and he was headed for a major league life. His baseball pitching was extraordinary. He bat with his right hand and pitched with his left hand. He was seventeen years old.
Just out of school he landed in the Chicago Cubs team. A great beginning for an extraordinary player. Some said he could out bat and out pitch the Babe, himself.
Raymond's biggest problem was he was one of the young men who was nearly always sent up to see Mr. Wrigley at the end of the day's practice. If the boys weren't performing up to standard during practice, he'd request that they "come up and say goodnight"...meaning they had to run up the numerous steps to his front door, pay their respects, then run down again!
Most times Raymond just walked up Mount Ada, ( named after Mrs. Wrigley), ran up the steps, said hello and ran back down the steps and walked back down to the ball field.
Afterward he would just walk along the bay road and sometimes sit in out of the way places and watch the fish flying and the waters roll in and out.
One evening as he sat there watching the waves roll in and out, he saw a young girl swim up to the rocks and then walk out of the ocean. She was lovely and he had a great desire for meeting her. He looked for a boat nearby where she had perhaps come from but he saw none.
Raymond sat casually by while she walked toward him. He spoke hello to her and she nodded her head at him. Raymond introduced himself. Her name was Holly and she said she was a miners daughter.
There are two, two thousand foot high mountains on the island that you first see when boating into Avalon Harbor from the California side of the island. Mt. Orizaba and Mount Black Jack. In the 1860's and the 1920's, a small mining industry briefly existed on the island. Miners discovered silver in 1864, but when the Army occupied the island that same year, all but a few miners with substantial claims were forced to leave.
Raymond fell madly wildly in love with Holly. She was the most wonderful girl he had ever met and she was truly beautiful with a very beautiful soul. As time went on, Raymond often did not see her for days at a time and he wondered where she went. When one night they parted, he left her at the ocean beach. He doubled back and watched her. He could not help himself he had to know where she lived and as she would not tell him, he had to find out.
As he watched she walked into the waters that rippled at the shore. Raymond nibbled his lip watching her. Where on earth was she going. She had actually walked into the waters with all her clothes on, and was now swimming far out to sea. The only boats in view were tied up at the big casino on the opposite end of the island. She was swimming out to sea headed for open ocean.
Raymond found himself rushing into the water calling her name, afraid she was going to drown herself. But she seemed so happy to him, she seemed like she loved him almost as much as he loved her. Why would she kill herself, he wondered as he began to shuck his shoes and dived into the water, intending to go after her.
When he reached the spot where she had disappeared under the waves, he dove deeply down to find her. Raymond was tired and he felt himself starting to tire even more. He needed air. But before he could swim upward he spotted a peculiar light emitting from below and he swam ever deeper toward it. He heard the sweetest music and then he spotted Holly swimming among the coral and the fish. Her long blond hair waved out behind her and she seemed to be in no trouble at all.
However this was not the Holly he knew and loved. It was a young girl with a fish tale of orange and silver scales. Her hair was long and filled with seaweed and sea stars. She was singing in a beautiful and haunting voice. The old fables about mermaids combing their hair was real. But the next thing Raymond knew was that he was out of air and he needed it fast. In his rush to return to the top of the ocean he swam head first into a huge sea boulder and it knocked him completely out.
The next thing he knew was that he was being worked upon by a couple of doctors at the local island clinic. When he was fully awake and the doctors had decided he was going to be okay they released him and he went back down to the water's edge. Did he dream this story about his love, Holly? Yes of course, he must have. Mermaids did not really exist. He felt stupid and completely baffled by his experience. What was he doing in the water at two in the morning? He went home to sleep and the next day he waited for Holly at their regular meeting place. Holly never showed.
The days turned into weeks, the weeks into a couple of months and no one knew what had happened to the lovely Holly. Everyone assumed she had left the island for the mainland and Raymond had just been a fling for her. Raymond had a funny feeling that Holly was still near by and he could not forget the dream he had had. Raymond's ballgame was suffering because he could think of nothing else but Holly. The team's manager had to finally tell Raymond they could no longer count on him and he would have to go back to Chicago.
Alone and without his job he just drifted around the island. Always on the lookout for Holly, he spent many hours dreaming by the sea. Finally he had no more money and he had to either leave the island or get some kind of a job to sustain himself.
Raymond took a fisherman's job and sailed along the waters of the island. Going to the other side of the island to catch fish, one day the little boat crew went ashore at a the little village called Two Harbors. Raymond spotted Holly. She was just sitting by the sea, watching the waves. He was so happy to see her, he ran toward her but when she saw him, she ran down the beach and jumped into the water and swam away.
Raymond went after her again and this time when he saw her at the bottom of the ocean, he swam over and collapsed into her arms. He woke up several hours later laying upon the shore, gasping for breath. However, this time he knew what he had seen was real and not a dream. He went right back into the ocean and swam down to her again. Again he collapsed and she brought him up for air. This time she did not leave him and when he awoke she was there. He clasped her hand and begged her to tell him what was happening.
This is the story of what Holly told to him that day as he lay upon the beach and held her hand. She loved him, but yes it was true---she was an honest-to-God Mermaid of the Sea. She was born to the great king Poseidon himself and she was over five thousand years old.
She had the power to become a human and walk upon the earth, but only for short times like a day at a time. Each night she had to return to the sea. In her world it was forbidden that a mere mortal and a mermaid should be in love. They are of two worlds. Hers was a world of magick and the vastness and the freedom of the oceans of the world.
For them to be in love and to be together, she must take him to the sea and he must drown and then be born again as a merman himself. Her folk had the power to make him immortal as a man of the sea, but it must be something voluntary on his part. Yes, being drowned at sea was a horrible and painful way to die, but it was the only way. She could not and would not ask him to make that sacrifice for her. She loved him far too much to put him into that way of ending his mortal life. The only other way for them to be together was to make her a mortal and then it would only be for a few hours each day as she was able to do now. She would never die, but he would as time took its toll because time has a way of making mortals old.
In time she told him he would forget her and he could go on his way with life as it should be be for him. No, he protested, this was not a doable thing. He must be with her always even if death were a part of it. His love for her would withstand the agony. In her ears she wore a tiny pair of pearl earrings given to her by Posedion himself. They were made from her own tears. They held the magick from Poseidon .
She caressed the pearls and her father rose up from the ocean floor with his magick golden trident sending sparks and flashes across the sea. The waters rolled and boiled with the splashing of the Hippocamps, the fish -tailed horses of the sea. Four mighty white stallions drew Poseidon's golden chariot upon the waves. He rose up to his full height of 50 feet and his beard was dripping with sea stars, bits of seaweed, tiny shells dripped and fell from the mighty God.
Raymond was in awe of this powerful magickal God who could deny him his wish to be by Holly's side, but she smiled and Raymond knew he had made the right decision. His heart was near bursting with love for her. The months he had lived without her made him know that life without her was not worth living and that she was his life.
Holly explained to her father that they loved one another and they wished to make it a permanent life together, even though it would be under the sea with him. Poseidon looked at Raymond and his eyes flashed dangerous sparks. He banged his trident upon the rocks and the fire flashed when the metal struck the rocks.
His voice boomed a thousand times louder than the thunder from the heavens. The Hipppocamps thrashed and pranced in the frothy waves. Pulling on the ropes of silver, they neighed and snorted.
Poseidon's voice rang out over the waters: "Do you fully understand the repercussions of your actions, mortal man? You must die in this body and be reborn beneath the sea. It is a most frightful way for a mere mortal to die. However, you will then be reborn, without a memory of your mortal life and you will live for a very, very long time. Mer folk are never doomed to die.
"Is this your wish? " Raymond shook his head yes and spoke in a loud and booming voice himself: "Yes it is my desire to be with your daughter for eternity."
"And so let it be," Poseidon boomed.
Raymond climbed into the golden chariot and Poseidon and the Hippocamps rushed out over the open seas. Holly held his hand and the waters raged around them as Raymond jumped into the sea. Down down down he and Holly swam, till Raymond's lungs were near to bursting. And with a swift and passionate kiss, he felt himself drifting from her grasp as Poseidon bound his arms with the golden ropes and the horses pulled him ever deeper. His lungs bursting and his mind dizzy, Raymond thought of his mortal family and felt sorry for their cross to bear, but when he thought of his continued life with Holly he gratefully accepted death.
And so it was.
Raymond's body was never found near or upon the rocky shores of Catalina island and the team said their farewells at his funeral services. But the real Raymond lives today and people often tell the tale of a young mermaid and her lover spotted upon the rocky shores of Catalina Island near the town of Two Harbors. She with an orange and silver tail and her long blond hair filled with seaweed and sea stars, him with a golden fishes tail and dark hair slicked back by the water. Their laughter is heard upon quite nights when the waves rush to shore.
